Marital Infidelity
|
 | With the
advent of the Internet, we have found ourselves undertaking a
whole new category of infidelity investigations -- Internet
Romances. These differ from the more conventional
extra-marital affairs in a number of respects: |
|
|
 | In more conventional illicit relationships, there are often
telltale signs such as unusual or unexplained absences from home
and "hang-ups" on the telephone. Such affairs take
time and often take money. Not so in the case of Internet
relationships. An unfaithful spouse can meet and cultivate one,
or a dozen, illicit Internet relationships while "safely at
home" on the computer. The cost of doing this is
negligible, and as mentioned, the time it takes to do it is
rarely suspect. Further, there is no need to phone because the
two have continuing and instantaneous contact on the
Internet. |
|
|
 | It is many times easier to find a romantic partner on the
Internet than it is in the real world. There are hundreds of web
site that cater to both "lonely hearts" and
"adventurers", and hundreds of sharks waiting to
establish a relationship and devour them. That is
not to say that all who frequent the many lonely hearts web
sites are bad people. We only want to point out that if your
mate wants to find "romance" on the Internet, it is a
"no brainer"! |
|
|
 | It is far easier to make and keep "dates" on the
Internet. Scheduling problems such as commitments to work and
family often limit the extent of illicit contact in a
conventional relationship. Not so in an Internet relationship.
E-mail can be sent back and forth at any time and the two can
schedule, and meet for a private, "one-on-one" chat of
just a few minutes or of several hours -- and nobody will be the
wiser! |
|
|
 | On the Internet, things like shyness and personal appearance,
take a back seat to the "security blanket" provided by
the computer and a willing imagination. In this Internet
environment, all women are beautiful, all men are handsome and
everyone is a good and loving person. |
|
|
 | It is no secret that Internet access is protected all sorts of
passwords. If your mate is cheating on the Internet, that
protection from discovery, may encourage the illicit
romance. |
|
|
 | Internet romances are often long distance affairs in which the
participants are hundreds or even thousands of miles apart. They
would not seem quite as threatening if this were only an
exercise in fantasy. Often, that is not the case. We have seen
Internet romances that have simmered for months only to erupt
into what often appears to be an insane rush to be with and
spend the rest of his or her life with an image at the
other end of an e-mail message. We have seen wives desert
husbands and children and move hundreds of miles to be with an
image she knows nothing about. We have seen businessmen conned
out of their families' future by some irresistible female that
he has never laid his eyes on! |
|
|
 | Often, illicit relationships of the conventional type are
aided and facilitated by Internet contact and communications. So
in that sense, an Internet romance may be nothing more than a
part of an ongoing affair. |
|
 | If your
spouse is computer literate and has access to the Internet, you
should at least consider the possibility that an Internet
romance is taking place. If there has also been prior evidence
of cheating or if your relationship has seen better times,
consider an ongoing Internet romance to be a very real
possibility. If, in addition, your mate is currently into
Internet pornography or phone sex, -- you can almost bet that
there is an Internet romance under way. |
